The Astronomical Society of Tasmania and the University of Tasmania have a long history of close cooperation. Many Society members, over the years, have been (or still are) students at the University.
In July 1989, on the invitation of Dr. Bob Watson, the Society began using the facilities of the then Canopus Hill Observatory, in particular, the 16" telescope. The Society, with the support of the University ran very popular public astronomy nights at the Canopus Hill Observatory.
In 2015, the Society moved it’s telescopes to new purpose built facilities at the UTAS Mount Pleasant Radio Astronomy Observatory site near Cambridge. The first joint Society-UTAS Public Open Night at our new site was a huge success.
